The coronavirus has brought the whole world and therefore Formula 1 to a standstill. However, according to Zak Brown and Ross Brawn, this is not so bad for the sport, where the bad situation can finally be properly assessed.

During the latest episode of the 'Vodcast' of Sky Sports, the team boss of McLaren and the top man of Formula 1 will join Simon Lazenby and Martin Brundle to talk about the current situation. An important theme is again the budget cap, which could bring much improvement in the sport.

Budgetcap can go down

"This might finally wake everyone up. It is clear that we need to make more aggressive decisions to move the sport forward and the budget cap is an important part of that. Maybe this situation was necessary to show that to some teams. This will make for a competitive sport and that's only good for everyone'', says Brown.

The technical expert of F1, Brown adds. ''We need to be better at this as a sport and be able to offer the small teams a financial and sportive picture that is interesting. You're not going to invest in a team to ride at the back, so we have to make sure that the gap between those teams gets smaller,'' says Brawn.

COVID-19 helps Formula 1

According to Brawn, there are several options, but the budget cap is the best. ''You could also work with a handicap that gives the winner more weight, but we want to avoid that. We already had to fight hard last year for the 175 million budget cap. That wasn't our ideal amount, but that's all there was to it.''

Brawn argues that the crisis did help. "COVID-19 did give us a chance to get that cap down. We're renegotiating now because teams also understand that the cap is meant for this kind of crisis'', concludes Brawn the interesting conversation at Sky Sports.
