Ecclestone on financial problems: ''I used to take over the races''

Formula 1 is currently completely silent due to the coronavirus and that has consequences for the sport itself, the teams and also the organisers of the races. How can this be resolved? Former F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone let us know his thoughts.

The former F1 top man was at the helm of the sport for years until the entry of Liberty Media. Ecclestone was pushed aside and thanked for his services. However, the situation surrounding the coronavirus is new for the sport and Ecclestone himself indicates that this is a difficult situation.

''If we go back in time we didn't have so many staff and so many financial interests, so if there were any problems I would pay that in advance. I would give them time to pay it back and sometimes they didn't have to do that at all. But things are different now,'' says Ecclestone to the Daily Mail.

Away with the motorhomes

''I would now set up a mountain of money to invest in F1 and distribute it to the interested party. I would first go to the organizers of the races. They are doing a fantastic job and you have to take that financial problem out of their hands now. Then you have to talk to the teams and make sure they are structured well enough to get through this'', concludes Ecclestone.

For example, according to the Brit, teams could already give up their huge motorhomes. According to Bernie the teams don't do this because it wouldn't be good for their ego, but those properties cost a lot of money.
