Brown expects it to take a few years for budget cap to take full effect

As of 2021, all the teams on the Formula 1 grid, will have to abide by a budget cap of 155 million euros. The aim is to close the gap between the midfield and the top teams, Zak Brown has his doubts but admits it is a good starting point.

Liberty Media announced the 2021 regulation changes at the end of October last year and some of the key changes included bigger tyres, more opportunities but the most talked about was a budget cap.

The aim is the make racing more competitive and entertaining as well as close the gap between the midfield and the top three. Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren, admits it might take a few years to feel the full effects of it but does feel it is a good start.

"I think I would like to see how the budget ceiling will work in its original form, but when dealing with ten teams it is inevitable that compromises have to be made," Brown told Motorsport.com.

“I think it's a good starting point. I think there are teams that spend significantly more.

"If you look at the order of the grid you can see who they are. When the budget ceiling comes into effect, I think we have five teams that come to that ceiling. Anything can happen between those five.

"I'm excited about the upcoming season, but realistically speaking, the grid won't change much.

“The same goes for 2021, who knows what the sport will look like then. I think it will take a few years before we see the effects of the budget ceiling. Teams are already spending a lot before 2021. It could be 2022 or 2023 before we really start to see an impact."
