Sebastian Vettel has said that the 2020 cars “should be faster” than the previous year depending on conditions but that the redesigned 2021 cars “will be a chunk slower”.

The regulations changes between the 2019 and 2020 Formula 1 season was minimal to have a large effect on the look and design of this years cars.

Vettel and Ferrari were dominant in pre-season this time last year as the German ended it with a time of 1:16.221, but Valtteri Bottas has already smashed that in his Mercedes, setting a lap time of 1:15.732.

While Bottas set a time 0.8 tenths faster than anyone near to him the four-time World Champion does expect the cars to be quicker this year.

“On paper, they should be the fastest cars,” Vettel said, as quoted by GPToday.net.

“It depends on the conditions and so on but we should be faster than last year but we will see.

“I don't know if the tyre choices everywhere are the same or if they are more conservative it will be difficult but if they are more aggressive than for one lap for sure they are faster.”

Despite being aware that the 2021 cars will be slower to drive Vettel doesn’t mind if it means racing will become more interesting.

“For next year, we look at this year's car and from the simulations, I have heard they will be a chunk slower,” he added.

“It's never nice to go slower but if the trade is better racing and it's more fun then it's a fair trade. If the racing doesn't get better then obviously it's not nice to get slower.

“Obviously the cars now are fast but I think they are way too heavy. But in terms of downforce, we have a lot of downforce, so we are fast.”
