Fernando Alonso has fired back at claims that he is selfish, insisting he is anything but that and even revealed he used to share his prize money with his team.

Alonso's Formula 1 career came to an end in with McLaren in 2018 when he left to pursue the Triple Crown of motorsport. However, he has consistently been linked with a return to the pinnacle of motorsport. His teammate that year was Stoffel Vandoorne and he recently told Voetbalmagazine that he would always get what he wanted.

However, the Spaniard and two-time World Champion has hit back, insisting he is anything but selfish.

“I’ve heard people say that I was selfish in my career," Alonso told F1 Racing magazine.

“At Ferrari and at other teams I always used to share my prize bonus with my mechanics. I thought if we were getting a podium or race win, it was not only me but teamwork.

“So, if I won $30,000 I would share it with my team.

“When I join a project, I commit 100 per cent with that team and I dedicate my life to that team and those guys and they appreciate it. The last thing that I am is selfish.

“Why is it that I have performed better than my team-mates? I cannot say sorry for that."
