Former Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali believes that a move for Lewis Hamilton to the Scuderia isn’t likely as they will be “focusing everything” on current driver Charles Leclerc.

Towards the end of the 2019 Formula 1 season several rumours circulated that Hamilton could leave Mercedes and join Ferrari in 2021 after there had been talks between the two last year.

But over the Christmas period it was announced that Leclerc would remain at the Maranello team until the end of 2024 after signing a contract extension.

This extension has led many to believe that Ferrari won’t push for the Briton, putting faith in their young star that proved his worth throughout 2019, winning two races and claiming seven poles.

“I think it’s normal to talk about this [potential Hamilton to Ferrari move],” Domenicali told Sky Sports in Italy.

“But my impression is that Ferrari is focusing everything on Charles Leclerc, so I don’t think they are going to sign a top driver like Lewis.

“The team is giving a clear direction focusing on a young talented driver.”

Domenicali adds that the 2020 F1 season should be a lot closer than previous years, expecting a close title fight to be decided at the final race in Abu Dhabi.

“I think it will be a very interesting season,” he added.

“I believe it will be different from last year and will be decided at the last race. Obviously I hope that Ferrari fans will be able to celebrate a success.”
