Max Verstappen believes that there will always be inconsistency in the way that Formula 1 is refereed by the FIA and the stewards. The Red Bull Racing driver has compared the race day officials to the football referees in the Champions League and believes that there will always be human error in the sport.

"You have different referees and some are more likely to give a yellow card than others," Verstappen said to Motorsport.com. "It is no different here. Of course you have the rules, but then the stewards still have some freedom to decide how the rules will ultimately be applied.

"If you have a match in the Champions League, you can get a red card from one referee, while another referee always gives a yellow one for a similar offense. Then as a footballer, you also have something like: "What is going on here?" I think it's exactly the same in Formula 1."

Verstappen has been fairly vocal about some of the FIA rulings in the past but it seems that he has learnt to understand that the rule book is there for interpreting and that decisions often seem unequal.

The Dutchman had a great 2019 and he will be hoping for more success in 2020.
