Lewis Hamilton became the 2nd most decorated Formula 1 driver of all-time when he won sixth F1 world championship at the United States Grand Prix. Former driver and now Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle dished out the praise for the British driver and labelled him as one of the "UK's greatest sportsmen".

Brundle was the first journalist to interview Hamilton after he was crowned world champion and Brundle made sure to give a firm handshake to congratulate the Mercedes driver. In his column, Brundle congratulates Hamilton once again and tries to add some perspective for all the hard work that goes into becoming who Hamilton is.

"Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton on his sixth Formula 1 World Championship. Frankly, that seems an unbelievable sentence to write, such is that mountain to climb. Anybody involved in F1 knows just how hard it is to achieve finishes, points, podiums, victories and a championship at this level. Let alone six," Brundle said on Sky Sports F1 website.

"Lewis must be fully recognised in every way for his sporting success to date, while not forgetting he's also risking his good health and life to deliver those global victories. I'm in awe of his relentless achievements, and I have no doubt he is one of the UK's greatest-ever sportsmen. Furthermore, there can be no realistic debate about 'greatest racing drivers of all time' without including Lewis."

Hamilton has now moved within one of Michael Schumacher's all-time world championship tally of seven titles. Brundle highlights just how close Hamilton is to some more Schumacher records.

"He's set to challenge every high tide mark left by Michael Schumacher. Sunday was his 150th F1 podium, just five shy of Michael's tally. He's ahead in other aspects such as pole positions, and frankly, it's not out of the question he could easily have seven or eight titles already, with a touch more luck and a following wind in 2007 and 2016. Although 2008 did involve some good fortune in Brazil," Brundle added.
