Renault ended up performing well at the Mexican Grand Prix despite failing to make it through to Q3 on Saturday. Both Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg finished in the points on Sunday, saving the team for a poor weekend.

"We have some points," Cyril Abiteboul reported to Motorsport-Total.com. "We more or less kept our lead over Racing Point and Toro Rosso and the gap to McLaren has narrowed.

"Regardless of the performance of the car, this must stop, we must not make ourselves unnecessarily difficult."

Renault have a habit of making things harder for themselves and they will hope to improve on their performances for the next run of races.

“I think we generally have a better package," Abiteboul said. "If you look at the points that we have lost, then our position is not even that bad.

“I am not happy with this position. I would rather be on par with McLaren because that was the goal this season - a feasible goal, we have to be there next year."

Renault want to be the 'best of the rest' and will have to continue to improve if they are to catch up with McLaren any time soon.
