Former Formula 1 driver JJ Lehto has questioned the spectacle of the last few races of the season with the constructor’s championship already sealed by Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton soon to claim a sixth World Championship.

Hamilton needs to finish eight or better at the US Grand Prix in Austin to sit one World Championship behind Michael Schumacher’s record of seven after winning four since 2014.

But even after Austin there are still two race weekends left on the calendar heading to Brazil and the season ending Abu Dhabi, something Lehto questions as to what the point is with the constructors and drivers’ championships done.

“What will we have then?” Lehto told the Finnish newspaper Iltalehti.

“The manufacturers’ championship has been decided and the drivers’ one will be confirmed very soon. Clearly second place is Valtteri’s.

“Perhaps there is a fight for third place between Verstappen, Leclerc and Vettel.

“But the bronze medal is interesting only because of the FIA prize gala, and at the moment it looks like Leclerc will be going."

With the addition of more races being added to the calendar over the coming years, starting with 22 grand prix in 2020 it has raised questions as to whether with more races it has led to anti-climactic end of season finishes.

“There’s been a lot of talk about this – that 16 races would be enough. It just feels like Liberty Media is adding a lot of races to the calendar,” Lehto added.
