Championship leader Lewis Hamilton has revealed he had "quite a bit of damage" on his car during the Mexican Grand Prix, as the Brit still managed to win the race starting from P4 although his championship celebrations will have to be kept on hold for now.

Hamilton came in relatively early for his stop as he opted to go for a one-stop strategy, meaning he'd had to run very long on his hard tyres in the second stint.

The still five-time champion suffered contact at the start of the race, however, as he got tangled up with the Red Bull of Max Verstappen in turn two of the race, with both stars going onto the grass and dropping places.

Looking back on the race, where he still managed to finish on top of the podium again, Hamilton was glowing.

"Today's an incredible result," he told his former teammate Jenson Button stood in the stadium sectium of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

"The guys have continued to work incredibly hard.

"We came here thinking we were on the back foot, knowing it was a difficult race for us but we pulled through."

He then revealed there was damage on the car from that contact on lap one.

"I had quite a bit of damage on my car so the race was quite a bit of a struggle.

"I kept my head down and it seemed like a long second stint. But I'm so grateful for today."

With Valtteri Bottas finishing P3, Hamilton still needs four more points to win his sixth drivers' title, something he has no problems with as he's just happy to get back to winning ways.

"I don't mind [waiting for the championship]. I love racing and I take it one race at a time. This is a race I've wanted to win for some time so I'm incredibly humbled by today's opportunity."
