Lewis Hamilton criticises DRS and hopes it doesn't feature in 2021

Lewis Hamilton hopes that Formula 1 will remove the Drag Reduction System (DRS) from the cars in 2021. The Mercedes driver feels that the system creates artificial overtaking and that the cars should be able to follow each other and overtake without needing it. 

“There’s nothing I can do about it but I think that it will be a part of Formula 1 for a while, probably," Hamilton said to RaceFans. 

“I don’t know if they’re going to keep it in 2021. I would imagine they would, but those wings are going to be quite a bit bigger and hopefully will following better, so maybe they won’t need it then.”

DRS feels srtifical for the drivers and without it the cars perform so badly when following each other that overtaking would be impossible. 

“Some of the overtakes, you’re overtaking halfway down the straight and of course and it’s not as exciting,” Hamilton said. “You want to be doing it in a corner, launch it up the inside of another car.

“But that’s just the way it is. It doesn’t bother me, I still have to try and get in the position to be able to utilise it.”

Hopefully, the 2021 cars will be better at following each other and DRS won't be needed for us to see quality overtaking.
