Toyoharu Tanabe: Japanese Grand Prix "did not live up to our expectations"

Toyoharu Tanabe has admitted that the results at the Japanese Grand Prix did not match Honda's expectations. Max Verstappen was forced to retire from the race but Alex Albon finished the race in 4th. Pierre Galsy did well to finish in the points but overall it was a poor weekend for Honda.

“This was a busy day for all the teams, with the unusual schedule during which we managed to get three of our four cars into the top ten in the morning qualifying, which was satisfactory," Tanabe said.

"Gasly drove an excellent race, finishing in the points after just missing out on the top ten last year in Suzuka. Kvyat fought hard and eventually finished two places up on his grid position.

"It was great to see the grandstand with 12,000 Honda fans and overall, a bigger crowd than in recent years. Everyone in the Honda team appreciated their support. Today’s result did not live up to our expectations, so we want to come back stronger next year and give our fans something more to cheer about.”

Honda will hope to keep improving and come back to the Japanese Grand Prix next year with the fastest engine and win the race.
