Marko believes Ferrari shouldn't "over-complicate matters" between drivers

Helmut Marko insists Ferrari were wrong to have an agreement made ahead of the Russian Grand Prix. He suggests the Italian team need to stop making things so complicated and leave Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc to race on the track. 

At the start of the Russian Grand Prix, Vettel was to use a tow from Leclerc to secure a Ferrari one-two into the first real corner of the race. If Vettel was to overtake Leclerc, he was due to give the position back but that never happened. 

“I believe it was wrong to agree such a strategy at the start. First of all, Mercedes had the harder tyres and if Hamilton had started better and gotten away the whole thing would not have happened. One shouldn’t over-complicate matters. The faster one should just retain the lead and then it sorts itself out," Marko told RTL. 

Vettel has been in a similar situation before at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing. He refused to use the 'multi 21' call which would have given Mark Webber and advantage in the race. Marko believes Vettel seems relaxed about the situation and will resolve itself in a similar way to what happened at Red Bull Racing. 

“Webber/Vettel is the opposite situation [in that] Webber was the established driver, obviously the elder, Sebastian was the younger. And, yes, we had our problems. We sorted them sort of halfway, but it was not easy," Marko added. 

"He appears quite relaxed about it. But that is part of it at Ferrari: emotions always come to the fore and spread outwards more than at other teams. It will resolve itself, and he simply needs to provide the answer on the circuit, as he did in Russia. That was the right direction.”
