The FIA and its motorcycle counterpart FIM are working together to iporve the safety standards of motorsport, starting with the development of a new paint to be used on tracks.

Both governing bodies are working on developing a new paint that is to be used at circuits shared by both cars and bikes to mark out the track limits, kerbs and run-off areas.

The new paint is designed to work in both wet and dry conditions with the aim of “reducing the potential for accidents due to a sudden loss of grip” with new frictions properties in the paint.

In a statement they said this is “the first of a number of collaboration projects” between the FIA and FIM as they will work together to improve safety related to circuits and competitor safety devices.

FIA president Jean Todt said: "It gives me great pleasure to welcome this collaboration with the FIM on a number of safety projects.

"By uniting our two governing bodies on safety, it means we can advance standards for all forms of motorsport worldwide."

FIM president Jorge Viegas said: "The FIM and FIA share circuits around the world.

"A collaborative approach to safety standards will not only simplify the process for the industry but will also ensure the highest level of safety for competitors worldwide."
