Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul says that current driver Nico Hulkenberg “would not have achieved his desired results” at Haas after the German still remains without a seat in 2020.

Abiteboul’s decision to replace Hulkenberg for 2020 with Esteban Ocon left the 32-year old looking for a drive to remain on the grid.

With teams confirming their line ups for next year and other places not an option Haas was looking like the set place for the German to be in 2020 to drive alongside Kevin Magnussen.

But it was confirmed that Romain Grosjean would be remaining for 2020 and Abiteboul feels it wouldn’t have suited his out-going driver.

“You have to look at what stage Nico’s career is at,” Abiteboul told Russia’s Championat.

“He’s also not the kind of the person who is willing to be in Formula 1 just to be in Formula 1.

“For him, Formula 1 is an ambition, a journey, not just a place to be. For him, the goals to be achieved are important, like the goals we have in our team.

“Nico is professional and experienced enough to understand that he is unlikely to be able to achieve those goals at Haas.

“I do not want to show any disrespect to Haas, but it is clear that he would not have achieved his desired results there.

“He is not someone who lacks ambition.”
