Max Verstappen ”not in a hurry” to decide F1 future after 2020

Max Verstappen has said that he is “not in a hurry” to decide his future in Formula 1 after his Aston Martin Red Bull Racing contract finishes at the end of the 2020 season, while looking to win the championship he potentially leaves.

By the time his contract comes to an end Verstappen will have been at Red Bull for four and a half years since his promotion during the 2016 season.
 
The energy drinks team combined with engine supplier Honda this year after proving themselves with Toro Rosso in 2018, leading to two wins in Austria and Germany with the Dutchman.
 
But his father Jos has been vocal about his disappointment of the progress that has been made from Red Bull in 2019.
 
Verstappen told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport about his future: “I’m not too worried.
 
“First of all, I want to take a close look at everything that has been promised and what actually matters. We want to win races and the championship next year, that’s why I’m here.

“Red Bull and I are working towards that goal. But there are so many other question marks after 2020. What’s happening generally with Formula 1?

“That’s why I’m taking my time. I’m not in a hurry.”

Where the 22-year old will end up in 2021 marks the question as to whether a seat at Ferrari or Mercedes is the preferred option with both teams engine’s being better than Red Bull in previous years.

“In the years after the team won the championships, the engine deficit didn’t help us,” he added.

“I think the philosophy was always to have a solid base and then catch up, and it worked from 2010 to 2013.

“But since then the other teams have improved.”
