McLaren has admitted that they're targetting a sixth-place finish for driver Carlos Sainz. The 25-year-old currently sits seventh in the standings with just five races remaining and is three points behind Pierre Gasly. Alex Albon has been catching Sainz in recent weeks and is just 14 points adrift.

“For the drivers' championship clearly our target with Carlos is to score P6, "Andreas Seidl said.

“There are two main competitors which are Gasly and Albon. Albon is catching up quickly So hopefully we can keep this fight up as long as possible

No driver out of Mercedes, Ferrari or Aston Martin Red Bull Racing has finished outside of the top six since 2015, so Sainz has got a real challenge on his hands.

“It’s impressive what Carlos is pulling off not just in qualifying but also what he’s doing race by race,”

“He was really unlucky in six races so far this year not scoring points. But whenever we gave him the machine to battle it out the track.

 "He’s delivering and that’s impressive.”
