Mattia Binotto, Ferrari team principal, says that Mick Schumacher’s “moment will come” in Formula 1 as the team are confident he will make it into the highest level of racing through their junior programme.

Schumacher, son of F1 legend and seven-time World Champion Michael Shumacher, signed onto the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2018 after winning the European Formula 3 Championship.

The German has been racing in F2 with Prema Racing this year and won his first race in Hungary with Binotto backing him to make an entrance into F1 when the time is right.

"Mick is making good progress, which we have expected in the past few years and now he is gaining valuable experience in Formula 2," Binotto told Bild (German).

"The moment will come where he is ready for Formula 1.

"We've invested a lot in him because we believe he can be a good Formula 1 driver."

The Ferrari Driver Academy has brought two drivers onto the grid in the past few years with Charles Leclerc making his rookie appearance with Sauber (now Alfa Romeo) last year before making the step up to Ferrari this season.

While Leclerc has won two races another FDA product in Antonio Giovinazzi replaced him at Alfa.

Schumacher has had experience in an F1 car as he took part in a test in Bahrain for both Alfa Romeo and Ferrari gaining valuable experience.
