He highlighted just how difficult it was for him at times and how his career started.

“It started at a young age: My parents had a full-time job after taking me from the hospital or the police station. It is a miracle how I survived my childhood! I lived for the risk, especially at the start of my career.

"That changed after the accident at Imola (friend and co-driver Ayrton Senna crashed there in 1994): I realized that it's better not to play with death.

The 59-year old made 210 race appearances which included ten race wins throughout a career which was spent at a handful of teams, most notably McLaren and Ferrari.

His racing career lasted for thirteen years and the Austrian picked up a total of 385 points in this time.
