Russell admits it is unlikely he'll leave Williams

George Russell has admitted it looks very likely he will stay at Williams for the remainder of his three-year deal despite the possibility of a Mercedes seat becoming available.

Russell stepped up to Formula 1 after winning the Formula 2 World Championship in 2018. He signed for Williams on a three-year deal but is a part of the Mercedes driver setup and has tested for the Silver Arrows this season, topping the timesheets on one occasion.

Williams have struggled for much of the season but Russell has impressed with the limited resources at his disposal. He has outperformed his teammate for most of the season but still sits below Robert Kubica after the Pole finished tenth in Germany.

Speaking to Motorsport.com the Brit admitted he isn't expecting to leave Williams unless anything drastic happens. He said: “The situation is that I signed a three-year contract with Williams.

"So unless something drastic happens, I see no reason why I should not be driving for this team in the coming years.

“As long as I continue to perform well, they continue to support me and something like that gives a bit of relaxation to a driver. It ensures that you can fully focus on the work that needs to be done."
