Haas F1 boss Guenther Steiner has said that he aims to aid test driver Pietro Fittipaldi secure his Super Licence for Formula 1 but is unsure how much the team can due to their current car issues.

Fittipaldi, grandson of F1 legend Emerson Fittipaldi, currently has 36 out of the 40 points required for a Super Licence and tested with Haas twice earlier in the year but hasn’t had the result in the German DTM series to acquire any more.

A recent ruling from the FIA for F1 this year allows drivers without a full Super Licence to run during free practice and earn a point towards it, something which Haas would like to do with Fittipaldi.

Steiner said (quoted by MotorsportWeek): "He hasn’t got the Super Licence.

"That’s one of the problems of the young drivers at the moment, there are not many around with a Super Licence and to get a Super Licence it’s pretty difficult.

"There is now a solution. It was defined that the team can get points for the Super Licence by putting a driver in for FP1.

"If he’s four points away, we see what we can do."

But Steiner isn’t certain how much time he can give the Brazilian in car because of the situation the team are in with its mixed performances across a Grand Prix weekend.

"For us it’s difficult at the moment," Steiner added.

"We would do it [FP1] for him so he’s got something moving forward but in the situation we are in at the moment, it’s up and down and we need both drivers to be testing the car as much as possible.

"Otherwise we are doing something that is not focusing on the right thing, because our focus is still not to be ninth in the championship and to get better.
"That is why I cannot promise something to Pietro."
