Pierre Gasly is a man under pressure and Jacques Villeneuve has not made things any easier for him after the Canadian criticised the Red Bull driver for not being up to the standard he should be at.

Gasly stepped up to Red Bull from Toro Rosso for the 2019 season having spent some of 2017 and all of 2018 at the junior team. His performances at Toro Rosso were enough to see him earn a promotion. He scored a best finish of P4 at the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix and his points tally of 29 saw him, partner, Max Verstappen this year.

However, things have not gone as planned for Gasly and with the good performances of Daniil Kvyat and Alex Albon, pressure is mounting on the Frenchman. Jacques Villeneuve isn't one to mince his words and he has criticised Gasly for not being at the level he should be.

"He's really, really far away [from Verstappen] he's not on the level he should be on, that's tough," Villeneuve said as quoted by MotorsportTotal.com.

"He's lucky he's still there."

Villeneuve hinted at why Red Bull may not have taken action earlier, adding: "They do not know who to replace him with."
