Next F1 season will be used as a test for the budget cap

One of the biggest talking points outside of car design is the budget cap. Liberty Media still need to decide if they want to introduce it to Formula 1 and according to F1 CEO Chase Carey, the 2020 season will be used as a test for the budget cap as more and more teams warm to the idea.

Currently, the difference in budgets between the 10 teams is significant. The three teams with the biggest budgets always finish on the podium (unless it rains) and therefore higher up the Formula 1 world championship. The smaller teams don't have enough money to lift themselves towards the top of the table. Carey says only a budget cap would solve this issue.

"It must revolve around the way you spend money, not how much. We want to ensure that the sport is healthy for all teams and at the same time improve the drama and unpredictability," the American told various Wall Street analysts.

"Some teams had their doubts, but now they are increasing their support of the concept and that is important to further expand the sport. I think everyone sees this as an important element," Carey continued.

The boss also confirmed that a test will begin during the 2020 Formula 1 season. This is to ensure that any problems can be identified as early as possible and solved before the rule and regulation overhaul comes into place.

"We must have everything in view and we must have the correct information available. We will use next season as a test, in which all teams will participate. This ensures that we can remove errors from the system," Carey concluded.
