Friday afternoon “irrelevant” says Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton has labelled Friday’s FP2 session in the wet “irrelevant” due to the dry weather forecast for the race on Sunday.
Hamilton topped the timesheet in his Mercedes during FP1, setting a time of 1:17.233 ahead of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, but stopped running in FP2 as the wet weather came after running a few laps on the hard tyre.
The Brit said in Mercedes review: "FP1 was a good session.
“I wanted to come back into the weekend feeling better and getting straight on it.
“The car the balance was quite nice straight from the get-go.
“We made some changes in between the sessions, but unfortunately we didn’t really get to test it.
“This afternoon I only got a few laps on the Hard tyre, then we stopped because running in the wet is kind of irrelevant when you know that the race is most likely going to be dry.”
Hamilton also said that the rain was deceptive from the pits and on the camera as it only looked like spitting.
But that on track there was a lot it was just hard to tell the damp parts due to the darkness of the track.
“The weather was tricky; from the pit lane and on camera it looks like it’s just spitting, but when you’re driving through it, it’s raining a lot everywhere,” he added.
“The surface is quite dark as well, so you can’t really spot if it’s dry or damp."
