FP2 report | Red Bull clinch a 1-2 after a wet practice session in Hungary

Pierre Gasly has topped the timesheets in FP2 ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. Max Verstappen finished second to supply Red Bull with a 1-2 session. F1 cars on track were few and far between as the rain limited the action.

Lewis Hamilton raised some eyebrows early in the session by beating the Red Bulls on the harder tyres. That didn't last long with Gasly posting his fastest time of 1:17.853 after the session was restarted.

The session was red-flagged as a result of Alex Albon's crash right after just five minutes of action.

Valtteri Bottas managed to get some running under his belt. He completed his long runs and finished the session in fourth. Daniel Ricciardo finished best of the rest after a Renault double DNF in Germany last weekend.

Sebastian Vettel finished the session in P13, while his Ferrari teammate finished in P7.

How it happened

It was a busy start to the second practice session with almost everyone starting their long runs early because of the threat of rain. However, those who wanted to run early were halted because Albon spun and had a massive impact with the wall.

After the early runs, Gasly (soft) and Verstappen (medium) topped the timesheets, with Hamilton (hard) in third. There doesn't seem to be much difference between the tyres this weekend, with the mediums slightly harder to get into the window. Lando Norris was stuck in the garage at this point due to a hydraulic leak.

The rain intensified which kept cars off track for around 10 minutes until Bottas returned on the intermediates to get more laps under his belt.

Norris made it back out on track with 50 minutes remaining. But like many others, the Brit did just one slow lap as he tried to protect his intermediate tyres. The track was too wet for dry tyres, but not wet enough for inters.

Keeping the McLaren theme going, Carlos Sainz tried running on the medium tyres, but a slight off proved the track was still too wet.

As the rain intensified in the final 20 minutes, more cars visited the track but the circuit was around 20 seconds slower in the wet conditions.
