Catalan government say they have reached agreement to keep Spanish GP!

A spokesperson for the Catalan government has claimed that they have reached an agreement with F1 to hold the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya for another year.

With Grands Prix in the Netherlands and Vietnam coming in for 2020, the Spanish Grand Prix was almost certain to be one of those that would be dropped for next season, following a string of boring races in Barcelona.

Spokesperson Meritxell Budo said: “Today, we reached an important agreement that allows the Grand Prix to stay in Catalunya for another year.

“Specifically, we have authorised the signing of the extension of the contract with Formula 1 for 2020."

Despite an agreement in place, the ten F1 teams will have to agree to expanding the calendar to 22 races, which would be more than ever before.

Home favourite Carlos Sainz revealed that he would be pleased to see the race continue, saying: “I heard that they are talking about a one-year contract but that nothing has been officially confirmed, but I’ll be very happy if it happens.”
