Charles Leclerc's former boss Frederic Vasseur believes he is coping with pressure from Mercedes better than Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel.

Leclerc made his debut in his rookie season last year with Sauber (now Alfa Romeo Racing), who Vasseur runs.

Vasseur didn’t expect Leclerc to settle in so quickly at the Scuderia after only one season in Formula 1.

He said to French broadcaster Canal Plus: “I did not expect that Charles would settle in at Ferrari so quickly.

“Everything seems a bit more difficult for Vettel.

“Both of them are under pressure from Mercedes but Leclerc is coping with it better.”

With the Monegasques impressive performances so far this season, many believe that he could potentially be Ferrari’s number one driver soon.

Vasseur felt, despite his crash, Leclerc showed a good enough performance to be on pole at the German Grand Prix but was unfortunately unable to run in Q3.

“Charles had a great first half of the season,” Vasseur added.

“Of course, that was not the case at every race, but I’m not talking about his crash in Germany.

“Last weekend also ended badly for both of the Mercedes drivers.

“The last two corners were very slippery and many made mistakes.

“But from the beginning of the weekend he (Leclerc) looked fast enough even to be on pole, and he also performed strongly in the three or four grands prix before it.”
