Lauda replacement announced by Mercedes

Mercedes have confirmed Markus Schafer will take on the role of non-executive chairman, replacing the late Niki Lauda who sadly passed away in May.

Schafer had been a non-executive director of MGP since March this year but will now take up the role previously fulfilled by Lauda. Lauda sadly passed away after suffering from illness in late 2018 and 2019. He died in May after undergoing kidney dialysis. 

Another move sees Frank Markus Weber, Vice President Corporate Development of Daimler AG become a non-executive director with immediate effect. 

Team principal, Toto Wolff spoke about the appointment, saying: “The commitment of our parent company has been fundamental to the team’s success and will continue to be so in the years ahead. 

"This support for Formula One has always been reflected in our team’s board, with strong representation from Daimler’s senior leadership, and it continues through the appointments of Markus and Frank Markus for the years ahead."

Schafer also spoke about joining the team's F1 programme adding: "Our learnings from the exciting world of Formula 1 have brought us valuable and inspiring synergies, and I am looking forward to build upon that close cooperation.”
