Lewis Hamilton has said he has "cancelled everything" duty wise before the Hungarian Grand Prix to recover from an illness he had at the German Grand Prix.

Hamilton revealed before qualifying that he was ill and almost decided to not take part and offer his Mercedes seat to Esteban Ocon for the race.

The Brit ended up qualifying on pole despite the illness but a poor performance in the race left him finishing outside the points but ended up finishing ninth after the Alfa Romeos were penalised.

Hamilton went off at the penultimate corner and damaged his front wing. He then came back onto the track and cut across the grass into the pitlane, which led to a five-second time penalty.

Coming back out in fifth he was left out when all other cars pitted under safety car so when Hamilton did pit and serve his penalty he re-joined outside the points.

He said (quoted by Motorsport-week.com): "I've cancelled everything I have for the next few days.

“So I'm going home probably just to sleep the next few days and try and get over this bug.

“It's not really improving massively, but hopefully over the next couple of days it will.

“I don't think being in the car is any good and health is so important so I'll just try and make sure I'm as healthy as I can be for the next race.”
