Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost has said that he wants the team to retain their current drivers Daniil Kvyat and Alexander Albon for 2020.

The sister team to Red Bull has undergone a regular change of drivers the past few seasons, having had Carlos Sainz and Kvyat together for the majority of 2017, before switching to Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley for 2018.

After Gasly’s promotion to a seat at Red Bull for this year Toro Rosso opted for another driver line-up, bringing Kvyat back to the grid and giving Albon a seat after he finished third in the F2 championship.

The two of them have collectively finished in the points eight times, five for Kvyat and three for Albon, proving themselves for a chance at driving again next year.

Currently Red Bull doesn’t have any junior drivers with enough super licence points for Formula 1, whereas engine suppliers Honda are keen on a Japanese driver being  on the grid but do not have any racers ready.

Tost ideally wants to keep his drivers but Red Bull ultimately make the decision.

He said (quoted by MotorsportWeek): “We have two really good drivers.

“Daniil we knew from the past that he is fast, he is also matured now and he is showing a very, very good performance.

“Alex, for me, is the positive surprise of the young drivers, together with [Lando] Norris.

“I think that he will have a very strong second half of the season because then he knows the car quite well, he knows what’s going on in Formula 1, and if we provide him with a proper package, I think that he will come up with really good results.

“I personally hope that we can continue with these two drivers but this in the end is a decision from Red Bull, and I think the decision will not be made before the end of September/the beginning of October.”
