Seidl: If McLaren matched big 3 on money "it would jeopardise our very existence"

New McLaren boss Andreas Seidl says pumping enough money to match the big three teams in Formula 1 would make McLaren 'go under'. He says the sport has to change in order for McLaren to take on the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.

Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz have both found enough pace and performance to climb back into fourth place. They face strong competition from Renault, but the Woking-based team is favourite to hold on through the second half of the season.

However, Seidl says if the team want to go further, they'll put their whole future at risk.

“We may not have the budget of the three big teams, but it is substantial. As an organisation, we are not at the level that we should be. I have kept watching F1 as a fan and I think it has not lost anything. It’s still an incredible platform. From this perspective, it has not changed since 2009 when I left," he told France's Auto Hebdo.

“The only difference is that the budgets have exploded and the gap between the three top teams and the rest of the field is no longer sustainable. Now, for a team like ours to be competitive, we would have to invest so much money that it would jeopardise our very existence.”
