Well FP1 thew up some surprises with Pierre Gasly topping the standings but it was business as usual for Mercedes in the second session with Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton back on top. 

What happened yesterday

It was an eventful opening day of the British Grand Prix weekend with bizarre crashes and surprise table toppers.

Romain Grosjean caught the headlines in FP1 after he had a terrible first session. After reverting back to his Australia package for this weekend, the pressure was on him, and his front wing soon felt the force of the barrier. As he was exiting the pits, he spun shattering his front wing on the barrier bringing out the virtual safety car. 

He would go on to spin off the track after a brief spell of rain, compiling the Frenchman's misery.

Pierre Gasly put in some quick laps at the end of FP1 to top the standings but Mercedes returned to the top in FP2 led by Valtteri Bottas. Ferrari and Red Bull were chasing their shadows, putting the Silver Arrows firmly in the driving seat.
