Rumours that Fernando Alonso could be returning to Formula 1 and driving for Mercedes and Ferrari now look unlikely to come true after the Spaniard confirmed he's happy racing in other disciplines. He claims he doesn't miss Formula 1 after over seven months away from the F1 cockpit.

Since Alonso departed the Formula 1 scene at the end of the 2018 season, he's won the WEC title and attempted to find the final jigsaw piece to the triple crown in the Indy500. He's been linked to seats on the Formula 1 grid, but it doesn't look like he'll fill them.

In a Q+A on his Instagram story, Alonso was asked if he missed racing in Formula 1. This was his response.

"Not a lot, the chapter I had was better than my most optimistic dreams! And the same motives that made me decide not to continue, continue to be present...;). Being able to compete and trying to win in other disciplines forces me to rise to a level I didn't have before. Very happy," Alonso said.

During the session on his story, he also had time to talk about his old team McLaren. The papaya orange team underperformed for virtually the duration of Alonso's stay. With Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz at the helm, McLaren seems to be on their way back up the grid.

In his response to the question "McLaren this year? They are pretty strong I think", Alonso also has time to criticise the sport.

"Fantastic. That was the plan. The team was/is/and will be always strong. Step in the right direction. Hopefully, we consolidate 4th place in the constructors. Still hopefully more to come, last 2 races 6th position was one lap down to the leader...and that's not good for the sport."
