Last time out in Canada Sebastian Vettel took a surprise pole position. Will he be able to repeat the feat, or will Mercedes continue to top the timesheets during the French Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend. We'll find out whether the Ferrari upgrades can trouble either Lewis Hamilton or Valtteri Bottas at 2pm (UK time).

What's happened so far this weekend?

The chat about Vettel's penalty is slowly dying down now we've had some cars back on the track. In both Friday sessions, Mercedes recorded a 1-2 finish. Hamilton led FP1 while the duo swapped over in the second session. Bottas topped the final practice session on Saturday morning, followed by Hamilton. The two Ferrari cars were busy on Friday morning as the team tested a new front wing. They kept swapping and changing, but it looks like they're sticking with the new wing which both cars used in FP3. Honda's new upgrade seems like it's working well, though Red Bull aren't that much closer to the top two. Max Verstappen managed to get within half-a-second of the leading Mercedes in the opening session.

And the midfield?

So far, McLaren has been on a stormer. Lando Norris finished FP1 in P7 and was backed up by Carlos Sainz's P8. In the second session on Friday, Sainz split the Red Bulls and Norris finished ahead in P5. Renault, Haas, Alfa Romeo, Racing Point and Toro Rosso have all been up and down the timesheets as they ran different set-ups. Meanwhile, Williams has been, well Williams.
