Helmut Marko has revealed Max Verstappen felt Lewis Hamilton didn't see him during their incident during FP2 of the French Grand Prix which saw the Red Bull driver run off the track but insisted Hamilton didn't need to be penalised.

Hamilton made a mistake at turn four of the Paul Ricard circuit which sent him off the track, colliding with a bollard in the process. As he re-joined the track Verstappen ran off himself, in an incident which drew similarities from Hamilton's with Sebastian Vettel two weeks ago.

The stewards ultimately decided no punishment was needed with it not being seen as dangerous. Helmut Marko felt this was the right call and revealed that Verstappen felt Hamilton didn't see him.

"Max thought he [Hamilton] simply had not seen him. That's why Max went wide, he didn't complain at all," Marko told Austrian television.

"We must not forget that we are in a Formula 1 race.

"This is not punishable for me but somehow there must be a consequence."

Despite his personal opinion being against punishment, he did admit maybe the results in Canada suggest otherwise, adding: "If we continue, on the line of Canada, then Hamilton should also be punished. Maybe even with a grid penalty."
