Seidl: Results of McLaren's restructure will only show in 2020

Andreas Seidl says the results from McLaren's management restructure will only start to tell in 2020 despite an improved car in the 2019 Formula 1 season. The team principal started work at the Woking-based team in May.

Seidl was part of the restructuring, as was technical director James Kay who started his role in January. This time last year, McLaren had virtually stopped scoring because of a fundamental problem on their car. This year they're showing no signs of holding up as they currently sit in fourth.

“This year’s car, which is a good step forward compared to last year’s car, has been started late after all the issues that were there within the team,” said Seidl in a conversation with Motorsportweek.

“I think the full extent of all the changes that have been initiated already inside the team last year we will only see next year because it’s the first car again which is somehow in the normal rhythm of the development."

McLaren's struggle has been well documented ever since their first season with the Honda engine in their car. Last season, using a Renault engine, things didn't work out either.

But moving forward, Seidl is pleased because their current car is reacting to upgrades and developments suggesting the only way is up for Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz.

“We have a car that is reacting to the development also that we bring to the track. There’s a lot of positive momentum and positive spirit inside the team, which made it a lot easier to get started for me," Seidl added.
