Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost believes Daniil Kvyat is a more mature driver nowadays, coupled with a greater technical knowledge of the sport, following a year out of the competition.

Kvyat was dropped by Toro Rosso at the end of the 2017 season - forcing the Russian driver to take a more behind-the-scenes role in the sport - being a simulation driver for Ferrari.

Tost believes Kvyat's year at Scuderia has helped him greatly to develop a better understanding of the technical aspects, as well as raise his maturity levels.

"Daniil is much more experienced now," Tost revealed. "He is much more mature. He understands the technical side much better. Last year, as we all know, he was working at Ferrari in the simulator.

"I think that he learned there also a lot and everything is coming together with him and therefore he is showing a good performance."

Toro Rosso had been in great form recently, but Canada saw Alex Albon having to retire from the race early and Kvyat could only manage P10 following a sensational overtake on Carlos Sainz in the latter laps of the race.

"Daniil had a fantastic race and defended his position very well against (Sergio) Perez at the start, and towards the end of the race, he was able to increase his performance which enabled him to pass others and score a point," the Toro Rosso boss added.

"I think this was the maximum we were able to achieve here, so we have to analyse all the data and figure out where we were losing here in Canada compared to others; to come back in the upcoming races with a stronger performance and get both cars finishing in the points."
