Racing Point owner Lawrence Stroll was very proud of his son Lance Stroll, who finished ninth at his home Grand Prix in Canada after starting  17th, as Racing Point's boss said he "couldn't be happier" with the way the race unfolded.

Lance failed to make it out of Q1 yet again, making it 11 straight times without making it further in qualifying, but the Canadian again was very competitive once the five lights went out. He picked off drivers around him quickly and sealed his drive at the end as he overtook McLaren driver Carlos Sainz for ninth place, earning two points for Racing Point.

"The whole team needed it, everybody needed it," father Lawrence told Motorsport.com.

"I could not be happier. We brought a few things, we know this track suits this kind of track better, so we were really hoping to have both cars in Q3.

"We had higher expectations before the engine blew in FP3, and then that put us on the back foot, having to take an old engine. With the new engine, we probably would have been in Q3, or close to knocking on the door. That was disappointing," he referred to the incident on Saturday morning.

"But a superb drive in the race, flawless, Lance didn't put a wheel wrong, did what he was told to with the brakes and tyres. His pace was strong pretty much every lap, and he passed when he needed to. Really well driven, and I'm really happy that it happened here at home."

Stroll's teammate Sergio Pérez failed to score any more points for Racing Point, finishing 12th.
