Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto was delighted to have one of his drivers get pole position in Canada as Sebastian Vettel beat the rest of the grid to it, as Binotto dubs the performance a "positive surprise" for the Italian team.

Mercedes were favourites for pole position heading into the weekend as they have taken each win this season so far. The Silver Arrows also introduced an engine upgrade heading into Canada, but Ferrari were the quicker team as the weekend progressed.

Still, for Binotto, the pole position came as a surprise, especially as Vettel hadn't taken one in 17 tries and Ferrari hadn't had one since Bahrain earlier this season.

"We're certainly very happy and the entire weekend we've been performing OK, this is a positive surprise," Binotto told Sky Sports F1 on their broadcast.

"The track will improve, it will be a lot hotter so it will be tough race for everybody."

Vettel won the Canadian Grand Prix in 2018 too; can he make it consecutive wins at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve?
