Hamilton hopes that 2021 rule changes will improve the "entertainment factor"

Lewis Hamilton believes that Formula 1 needs to make some major changes if it is to retain and expand their fan base. The Mercedes driver has criticized past attempts at making the sport more exciting but hopes that the 2021 rule changes will be different and that Formula 1 can become more competitive.

"If you look over the past 12 years and beyond that, they always shift and change the regulations for the car to try and improve costs and overtaking and I think in general the decisions haven't been great in all of those years.

"Liberty has taken over now and we still have the same issue. People are not excited to watch and there is still a separation between the top wealthier teams and the lower teams.

"There's the entertainment aspect. Every weekend it's the same four days, 21 weekends per year and that format has never changed. The entertainment factor needs to change to suit different tracks.

"The fans are the reason we are able to do what we do and people continue to say the sport is boring because one team always seems to dominate. Hopefully, they are thinking about that for 2021."

Hamilton went on to suggest what he would change.

"If I had a choice I would go back to V12 and manual gearboxes and make it harder for the drivers. Take away the big run-off areas, remove steering assists. You should be physically exhausted after the race."

Formula 1 is set for a major change in 2021 and hopefully the sport will become more exciting for the fans watching.
