Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto does not expect any "significant" improvements for the time being, following its poor start to the 2019 season.

Scuderia have not won a race in the first six grands prix at the start of the season, with its title rivals Mercedes winning every single round of the Formula 1 championship so far.

Ferrari recorded its highest position in Monaco - with Sebastian Vettel in between the two Mercedes cars in second-place - but the Italian manufacturer are already 118 points behind last season's champions.

Asked by Motorsport.com if the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend could offer Ferrari any sort of hope, Binotto replied: "I think it's very difficult to judge. I think we will be in a better shape compared to Barcelona, but I think they (Mercedes) have still got the best car and the strongest car at the moment.

"I think they are still the ones that should be ahead but maybe the gap will be closer. If there's any opportunity, we will be ready to take it."

Last time out in Monaco, Ferrari made a strategy error, telling Charles Leclerc that his time would be quick enough to progress him into Q2 on the Saturday. However, the Monegasque driver was eliminated in Q1 from his home grand prix.

Leclerc then started in P15 and his desperation to move up the grid meant he eventually spun his car out, damaged his car and was forced to retire early on.
