Hakkinen impressed with Verstappen move but Hamilton would always win

Mika Hakkinen has admitted it was good to see Max Verstappen try to overtake Lewis Hamilton at the Monaco Grand Prix but insisted the Brit was always going to win in the Principality.

Hamilton secured pole and went on to win the Monaco race but it didn't come without its difficulties as he had to fend off Verstappen for over half the race. With Hamilton's medium tyres suffering a lot more than Verstappen's hard set, the five-time World Champion was seriously concerned and made his views felt over the radio.

Nonetheless, Hamilton secured the win but Hakkinen praised Verstappen's attempts in the closing stages of the race.

"It was fantastic to see how much pressure Max put on Lewis in the last twenty laps of the race, while Sebastian was clearly waiting on P3 to see what would happen," Hakkinen said in his column on Unibet.

"Max gave everything and it was good that he was trying to overtake Lewis, even though he was quite late with his attempt at the chicane.

"It was a spectacle, but in the end, Lewis would stay there anyway.

"I can't blame Max for going for it."
