Alonso Indy failure is "sad to see"

Daniel Ricciardo has admitted it is “sad to see” Fernando Alonso’s failure at the Indy 500 after the Spaniard failed to qualify for the main event.

The two-time Formula 1 World Champion failed to qualify for the actual race, finishing fourth of six drivers in the shootout known as ‘Bump Day’. Alonso recorded an average speed of  227.353mph over four laps, 0.019mph slower than Kyle Kaiser who qualified thanks to his final lap.

It means Alonso will have to wait another year to complete the triple crown of motorsport, after already winning the Monaco Grand Prix and the Le Mans 24 hour.

Ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend Daniel Ricciardo commented Alonso’s failure to qualify saying: “Obviously I had confidence that he would be able to hop in and be relatively competitive, because I think he’s obviously a very very good driver and very capable and still very motivated and driven, so I think that showed in 2017, was it?

“But I guess, as well, this year it looks like obviously, you need… you’ve got to be a good driver but set-up and all those things at those margins are so important.

“It’s sad to see; obviously, as part of the F1 family, we want to see him do well but yeah, for reasons I honestly couldn’t understand or explain… I’m not in that world.”
