Renault say that they will not begin developing their 2021 car, despite their disappointing season so far in 2019.

The French team had been targeting 2021 as the year they will return to competitiveness in Formula 1, but with such a poor 2019 so far, there have been doubts that the team will be able to make the jump to the top of the sport.

This led Renault’s executive director Marcin Budkowski to deny that they will look to start work on their 2021 car any earlier than planned.

When Budkowski was asked by Motorsport.com if they would switch attention, he replied: "I doubt it because 2020 at the moment looks like a year of regulation stability, so whatever you are doing today on 2019 will benefit you in 2020.

"If you stop any development on 2019 now you will hurt in 2019 and 2020. It could be a possibility next year because the impact would only be on 2020, but at the moment it is too dangerous. However, it is a balancing act.

"We are doing three car projects with the resources you normally have to do two. You have to make compromises and you have to pick your priorities carefully.

"Yes, we have an important milestone for 2021 with the changes and therefore opportunities, but we have 2019 and 2020 in the meantime that we still have ambitions for."
