Championship leader Lewis Hamilton has identified his biggest threat in the 2019 title race, as the reigning champion thinks teammate Valtteri Bottas will be his main competitor for the championship.

Hamilton certainly has a proper title scrap on his hands this season, with Bottas looking a different man as he has won two of the opening five races, finishing second in the other three.

Bottas has led the championship for big stretches of the year, but with his third win compared to Bottas' two, the five-time champion leads by seven points now.

As he looks to extend that gap heading into Monaco, Hamilton is well aware of the threat that is Bottas.

“The biggest threat is always the person closest to you,” the 34-year-old told Crash.net.

“We have a buffer to the other guys and even though the Red Bulls have picked up on their engines this year, they have not built a car as good as in previous years and Ferrari too have good power but are lacking areas.

“So the closest to you is always the biggest threat especially as Valtteri is pulling out some great laps. It is good for the team and he fully deserves his position in the team and it is great to see him step up to another level.”

Is it unfair not to give Ferrari any credit?
