Despite Renault's poor start to the 2019 season, and the pressure ever-increasing on Cyril Abiteboul; the boss of the French-works team has insisted the goal for this season has not changed.

Renault has always set itself huge and ambitious targets and its ultimate goal is to be world champion in the next few seasons. With Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg driving for them - there is no doubt they have the talent in its drivers - but something isn't quite clicking.

Despite the season starting poorly for Renault; who have just 12 points from the opening five races, Abiteboul has insisted the goal for this season has not changed in this time.

"We want to come back to the performance that we keep in mind for this part of the journey," the Frenchman admitted. "Our objective remains the same. We are not currently planning to deviate from that.

"That actually applies to everyone. I am sure that if Haas, Toro Rosso or McLaren do everything well, they can do the same. Midfield is still extremely open and I think it will remain that way in the two-thirds of the remaining season. That is basically the only good news."

Renault finished as "best of the rest" last season in fourth-place. However, the current gap to McLaren - who now occupy the status Renault are chasing - is 10 points.
