Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has called for the Circuit de Catalunya to continue to keep hosting testing for Formula 1, despite the circuit losing its Grand Prix on the F1 calendar to the Dutch Grand Prix.

It was announced this morning that the Dutch Grand Prix, which will be held at the historic track of Zandvoort, will be taking the place of the Spanish Grand Prix from next season onwards.

While this season's Spanish Grand Prix certainly wasn't one to remember, it has been a fixture for a very long time in F1, and Horner is sad to see it go.

“I think it would be a great shame if we don’t come back racing in Barcelona but we certainly should continue to test here,” the Brit argued to Crash.net.

“I think being European-based, far enough south to have sensible weather and from a cost point of view, it’s cost-efficient for the European-based teams to come and test here.

“And it’s a good track, it’s got a combination of low-speed, medium-speed and high-speed corners, so it would be a shame if it doesn’t get utilised for at least testing duties.

“The teams have a good reference around here. It’s convenient and the weather is usually pretty sensible for pre-season testing.

“I would certainly be supportive of coming here prior to next year.”
