Carlos Sainz has admitted the performance from his McLaren team was disappointing after the Spaniard was knocked out in Q2.

Having looked faster than their power unit supplier for much of the weekend, it was Renault and not McLaren who got a car into the final shootout session, with both Sainz and teammate Lando Norris eliminated in the second session while Daniel Ricciardo ended qualifying 10th.

Speaking to media after the session, Sainz said he felt he had lost his way with the balance of the MCL34 through the session and that the pace was not there come Saturday.

"After a strong run in P2 yesterday, today in practice three we didn't find the right balance and we were struggling a bit," he said.

"Q1 was encouraging, we were quite fast. but as the track temperature went up, we were starting to lose quite a lot of rear grip so for reasons we still don't understand so we didn't improve in Q2 as much as we would have liked.

"Yeah, not that harmony with the car the same as I had yesterday so things to analyse and look forward to tomorrow."

Sainz will star this home race from P13, one place behind teammate Norris.
