Williams driver Robert Kubica has revealed he still enjoys being back in Formula 1 after eight years of absence, even though his team are massively struggling for performance on the track.

After his horrific accident at the start of 2011 during a rally stage, Kubica has sat out eight consecutive F1 seasons after a host of surgeries on his right arm. The life-changing injury was seen as the end of his F1 career by many, but the Pole defied the odds and landed a seat at Williams for the 2019, after being the reserve driver the previous year.

However, his comeback year hasn't gone as planned, with the Grove-based team trailing the grid by quite a long way at the start of the season. Kubica is very aware of the team's struggles, but he remains positive, as he says he still enjoys being in F1.

“Our realistic target was to have a smooth start to the season,” the 34-year-old told Formula1.com.

“It was important to have positive momentum so that we could focus on improving the car and try to put it into the best performance window.

"Unfortunately the situation at testing was a bit different," he admitted, referring to the disastrous pre-season visit to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya where the FW42 wasn't even ready in time to take part in the first two days of February's official first test. It was very disappointing.

“This might sound strange, but I’m enjoying being back," he continued.

"I’m happy to help, happy to get involved if I’m asked.

"It’s probably because I was away for a long time. I know we are struggling, and we are slow, and the races are difficult, but I enjoy it."
